Traffic was being detoured from a busy downtown Binghamton street because a crane was being used for a project at the Printing House apartment building.

Workers from Pro-Tel Telecom in Norwich were removing communications equipment from the top of the former Press Building at 19 Chenango Street.

A Pro-Tel supervisor said the old equipment used by a major wireless company was being taken down.  The items removed from the building were hauled away for possible repurposing.

The crane being used for the job was from C.P. Ward Crane service of Montour Falls.

Several Pro-Tel employees were involved in the project, which began Monday.

Chenango Street was closed to through traffic between Henry street and the Court Street roundabout. The job supervisor said he expected the work to be completed Tuesday afternoon.

Pro-Tel personnel worked on equipment at the Printing House building a few years ago during a roof replacement project.

The student apartment complex was developed in the 12-story structure that was built in 1904 for The Binghamton Press. It served as home for the newspaper for six decades.

The building later was restored and used for offices until its sustained heavy smoke and water damage as the result of a massive fire in a neighboring structure in December 2010. It opened as student housing in August 2016.
