We all are united over our love and faith in panipuris. Doesn't matter how many times we are warned not to eat this "unhealthy" food, we still sneak out to have some of these.
A typical pani puri comprises a deep fried puri, a small ball of boiled mashed potato, chopped onion, mango powder, cumin powder, salt, chilli powder and a spicy water of mint and tamarind.
What makes this Indian snack stand out from others is the variety of flavours it holds. It is spicy, tangy, salty, at the same time and also has a small taste of sweetness.
Many reports and experts link the health benefits of cumin and mint to suggest that having pani puri will also give the same benefits to a human body.
The water component of an ideal pani puri serving consists of cumin, mint and tamarind.
The ready-to-mix pani puri masala available in market comprises rock salt, dried mango, cumin, chilli, black salt, mint lead, black pepper, dried ginger, tamarind and citric acid. The ingredients remain the same, with minor additions or deletions, when the pani is prepared at home.
To add flavour to the pani puri water, salt is used in large amounts. Excess intake of salt makes the body retain water and can jeopardize one's weight loss efforts.
Albeit, simple mint water is a wonderful drink for weight loss. Having mint water is good for your health. Mint is known to cure irritable bowel syndrome, relieves indigestion and improves immunity. Mint contains fibre, vitamin A, iron, manganese and folate which are essential to the human body.
Cumin is also a good source of nutrient and having a small glass of soaked cumin water helps cure stomach related ailments, experts have said.
Personal experiences and expert suggestions have shown that essential foods when taken as a whole help the human body better.
In a 2015 tweet, nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar had said, “Having pani -puri ka pani for weight loss will make you as round and brittle as a puri! #unfunnyfact.”

" One serving of pani puri contains 329 calories," renowned foodwriter, chef and cookbook author Tarla Dalal had said. "Out of which carbohydrates comprise 207 calories, proteins account for 38 calories and remaining calories come from fat which 82 calories. One serving of Panipuri provides about 16 percent of the total daily calorie requirement of a standard adult diet of 2000 calories," states Tarla Dalal's official website.
It is said that rava (semolina), plain flour (maida) are not good for human body. The reason that these are deep fried to puris makes panipuri unhealthier. Deep fried foods increases oil absorption. If the same oil is used to deep fry puris, the smoking point of the oil decreases leading to the formation of blue smoke which is harmful for the body. According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) reheating cooking oil can release harmful toxins, increase the percentage of trans- fats in it, becomes rancid, gives rise to free radicals, and gives rise to some very harmful reactions.
Everyone's favorite panipuri has always been seen as an unhealthy food. Mostly the unhealthiness of this lip smacking amazingly tasting snack is blamed on the unhygienic methods of preparation by the vendors. But we still eat them, because there is nothing like having a plateful of these from the street side vendors.
