still from Lightyear official trailer 2, Pixar
We knew going in that Lightyear would take us to infinity and beyond, but we didn’t see that coming.
Toy Story fans have been given an extra special treat this June courtesy of Lightyear, a spin-off from the popular Pixar franchise directed by Angus MacLane.
The opening text explains that Andy’s favourite movie encouraged him to ask for a Buzz action figure for his birthday. Lightyear is that movie; the film that the toy we’ve come to love over four movies is based on.
This version is voiced by Chris Evans and is tasked with saving humanity on the planet T’Kani Prime from the perils of his iconic nemesis Zurg.
There’s a lot to unpack for Toy Story enthusiasts, but a new, lighthearted detail has demanded our attention. Could we be talking about anything other than Lightyear’s meat sandwich?
Buzz and the gang are making headway on their mission, moving closer and closer toward Zurg.
When aboard the villain’s ship, Mo (voiced by Taika Waititi) discovers a vending machine and he manages to get some meat sandwiches before the machine plummets over the side of the ledge.
Buzz opens his to discover that sandwiches aren’t exactly as he remembered.
In the future, the filling/meat itself is on the outside and the contents of the sandwich are a single piece of bread. A reverse of the regular sandwich, if you will. This opens a hilarious debate between them all as they argue which is better, past or present.
Buzz is the odd one out in his verdict, and it’s been fun to see that the discussion has expanded beyond Lightyear and onto Twitter…
A number of audiences have wasted no time in hopping onto Twitter and voicing their thoughts on the alternative method of snacking.
Some have even reached out to the cast to ask if they’ve tried it for themselves!
Check out a selection of tweets:

@ChrisEvans My son and I just ate an ice cream cookie sandwich and he wondered… ice cream, cookie, ice cream? 😄 We really enjoyed Lightyear, great work!
I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that Lightyear is about sandwich ontology.
During a conversation with The Wrap, Chris Evans and his co-star Keke Palmer (who voices Izzy Hawthorne) opened up about the meat sandwich after addressing enthusiasm for a Lightyear theme park ride at Disneyland.
“I’m into a Lightyear ride, we already got our Buzz ride in Disneyland, my thing is I want a food place,” Keke admitted.
“Give me the meat sandwich. I love a ride, but I would also really like to have a deli next door that serves the meat sandwiches.”
Not only is Keke passionate about the idea, but Chris too. Keke even brought it up again when having a chat with Heat, saying she loves “the lack of carbs”, with Taika Waititi saying that he’s already taking the top layer off his anyway.
Let’s see it happen, Disney!
Lightyear is now screening exclusively in theaters.
