Peeps, pandemic’s sweetest victim

We all know someone who is an old school devotee of Peeps, whether lusting for new orange pumpkin faces for Halloween, hearts for Valentine’s Day, or little yellow chickies (which I always thought were duckies) for Easter.

Sam Born, an immigrant from Russia, founded his Just Born candy company in 1953 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1953 Just Born bought the Rodda Candy Company and thus acquired its chick line made of marshmallows. Originally Peeps were hand shaped out of marshmallow, a process I find hard to imagine, especially when Peeps are touted to be “indestructible.”

Now Peeps, where and if you can find them, are made of sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, a tiny bit of salt, and various food dyes depending on what holiday they are manufactured and sold for. If they are on store shelves, they could be from last year or earlier.

According to the manufacturer, Peeps candy will not be produced this year for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day due to the pandemic.

Just Born Quality Confections, the company that makes Peeps, said it will stop production for the upcoming holidays to prepare for Easter 2021.

Just Born also makes Mike & Ike, Hot Tamales and Peanut Chews in case you get desperate.
