In the midst of a huge weekend on the recruiting trail for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program, fans on the Forty Acres will be glued to the headlines surrounding all the key official visitors in the next couple of days. Headlining this huge official visit weekend for Texas is obviously the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning.

There are still other recruiting storylines for Sark and the Longhorns worth watching over the course of the weekend, though. One development worth noting is the connection between the touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthews to the Longhorns.

Texas already looked to have momentum in the race to land a commitment from Matthews. But the stakes have risen in this recruitment of late as more interest from big-time programs and a fast-rising stock for Matthews have combined to see his value soar in the last few weeks.

Despite the heightened attention for Matthews from competing schools on the recruiting trail, it appears that Texas could still be setting the pace here. That is evident by Hudson Standish of 247Sports putting in another Crystal Ball Prediction that favors Texas. There are now two expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions that favor Texas in this recruitment.

It’s also worth noting that the On3 recruiting prediction machine heavily favors Texas in this recruitment along with two forecasts that favor the Longhorns from some of their analysts.

Texas does not yet have an official visit booked for Matthews for any actual date. But a post on the Twitter timeline of Matthews on June 17 indicates that Texas and the Alabama Crimson Tide are both due for official visits on dates to be announced later.

The official visits already scheduled for Matthews are with the Michigan Wolverines (June 3), Stanford Cardinal (June 18), and Tennessee Volunteers (June 24).

It is realistic to expect that Matthews will get officials on the books with Texas and Alabama by the end of the Summer visit season.

If Texas were to land a commitment from Matthews in the near future, he would be the second blue-chip defensive back to join the 2023 class. The other blue-chip defensive back in the mix for the Longhorns 2023 class is four-star Arlington-Seguin safety Jamel Johnson.
